Lynne Huysamen reviews the following African Secret products for her blog ‘KABOUTJIE’: https://kaboutjie.com/
Part 1: Tea Tree Cream, Relaxing Oil, Pain Relief Oil
A bit of background:
Kaboutjie is a family and parenting orientated blog written by Lynne Huysamen. Lynne is a married mom of two primary school children, living in Saldanha. She is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict with bipolar. She is passionate about parenting and sharing about mental health.
“I’m a huge fan of natural remedies and products that are natural so I was incredibly excited to try out the range of products that African Secret sent to me. I was asked what are some of the things that I struggle with and they made up a special hamper just for me!
I love the fact that African Secret is a South African business founded by Stacey Jane Smith. I really feel that it is important for us moms and women to support each other in business. Women face so many challenges, especially when we head into the business world. In addition to the standard challenges, we have been faced with even more difficulties since the beginning of 2020 with the pandemic having a devastating impact on women.
Tea Tree Cream
I love anything with tea tree – it reminds me of growing up and for so many ailments we had my mother’s solution was tea tree oil. When I opened the box from African Secret this was the gem that jumped out at me because I could see the incredible value in this cream before I even opened it.
It did not disappoint my high expectations at all, in fact it was even better than I thought it would be. I’ve been using it for my feet because I am prone to getting dry, cracked heels. I’ve also been using it for my elbows that get dry. My son gets dry skin around his nose if I don’t keep it nicely moisturised, so any sign of his skin not looking good out comes the Tea Tree Cream, just like my mother used to do for me as a child.
There are so many uses for this Tea Tree Cream including eczema, insect bites, skin irritations, sunburn rashes, razor burn and grazes. It is has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties, making it not only a fantastic beauty product but also an essential item for your medical aid kit.
If you have never heard of the benefits of tea tree oil do yourself a favour and try this Tea Tree Cream out!
Relaxing Oil
This relaxing oil aromatherapy from African Secret is another gem. It has lavender oil (another of my favourite natural remedies), sweet almond oil, rose geranium and evening primrose oil.
This oil is high in Vitamin E and offers anti-aging benefits as well as being antioxidant, pain relieving and helps with skin irritations.
However none of the above are why I am in love with this oil. I am an alcoholic and drug addict in recovery with bipolar disorder and I suffer from insomnia. Now that I am over 40 years old I am also struggling with migraines every month. My mental health has not been in the best state since the start of the pandemic and my stress levels have been through the roof.
This oil has been a life saver for me. Due to the fact that I am an addict I can’t use anything other than paracetamol, when that does not work then I need to look at natural remedies. Paracetamol does nothing for my migraines but this oil works wonders.
When I feel a migraine coming on I lie down and massage this oil into my temples. It has not failed me yet.
My mood stabiliser medication for my bipolar disorder used to help me to sleep well, but due to all the additional stresses in the last year I have found that my sleep has not been good at all even with my meds.
If I work late at night on my laptop I find it incredibly difficult to unwind and have a good night’s sleep. While there was a long period of time where I could get away with not working at night the last year I have had to often work late into the night again and this has been very problematic for my sleep health. I’ve been adding this relaxing oil to my bath and it has made a significant difference, especially on the night’s when I have to work late at night.

Pain Relief Aromatherapy
The pain relief aromatherapy is another great product by African Secret. The ingredients are peppermint, sweet almond oil, rosemary and black pepper. It is made to relieve aches and pains. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and analgesic properties to increase blood and lymph circulation. It soothes aching, tired and overworked muscles.
I’ve made good use of this oil to massage into my neck and shoulders as well as my lower back. Due to working at a desk I get a lot of shoulder and neck strain. I also find that when I am under emotional stress (hello lockdown) I feel it very physically in my body. When I feel unwell or my body is under strain I can almost always trace it back to emotions. This is felt very much in my neck and shoulders too so this has become a big problem area of pain for me the last few months.
I had to start going back for Body Stress Release sessions towards the end of last year to help resolve this.
I also have on and off sciatica that bothers me. I feel it as lower back pain and shooting pains that start in my bottom and shoot down my leg.
Since making regular use of the pain relief oil from African Secret I have not had any further issues with sciatica and my neck and shoulder pain has decrease to a manageable level.
